How to search and claim an LLC name in Utah
- Search Utah's official entity records at no cost, leaving “LLC” off the name.
- Make sure the name ends with one of Utah's accepted endings, such as “Limited Liability Company” or “Limited Company”.
- Hold the name with a $22 reservation for 120 days if you need time before filing.
- File the Certificate of Organization with the Utah Division of Corporations and Commercial Code for $59.
What an Utah LLC name must include
Utah accepts these endings for a limited liability company:
- Limited Liability Company
- Limited Company
- L.L.C.
- LLC
- L.C.
- LC
A Utah LLC's name ends in “limited liability company”, “limited company”, “L.L.C.”, “LLC”, “L.C.” or “LC”, and “limited” can be shortened to “Ltd.” and “company” to “Co.”. The name can't contain “association”, “corporation”, “decentralized autonomous organization”, “incorporated”, “partnership”, “limited partnership” or “L.P.” (§ 16-1a-303(5)(c)). Words like “bank”, “banc”, “bancorp”, “savings bank”, “thrift”, “industrial loan” or “trust company” need the Department of Financial Institutions' consent (Utah Code § 7-1-701), and Olympic terms need the U.S. Olympic Committee's. LLCs formed or renamed on or after May 4, 2022 can't use “911”, and no name may suggest a state agency.
How Utah decides two names are the same
Since October 1, 2026, Utah Code § 16-1a-302 requires your LLC name to differ on the Division's records from active domestic filing entities, registered foreign entities, registered DBAs, and reserved or registered names. A single changed or added word, letter or numeral makes it different. Ignored: LLC, Inc., Corp., P.C. and other entity terms, “the”, “and”, “a”, “plus” and their symbols, punctuation, spaces, special characters and capitals, plus abbreviations and singular or plural forms for entities formed after May 4, 1998. Division guidance that predates the recodification counts new key words, rearranged key words, inventive spellings and words of distinctly different meaning. A name that matches another only apart from its entity term can be used with the holder's consent, or after a court judgment. Note that an administratively dissolved company holds on to its name for five years after dissolution (§ 16-1a-604(3)).
Where the rules are written. Utah Code §§ 16-1a-302 (permitted names), 16-1a-303 (name requirements by entity type), 16-1a-304 (reservation), 16-1a-212 (annual report), 16-1a-604 (reinstatement); Title 42, ch. 2 (D.B.A.s) - all effective October 1, 2026 (Laws 2026, ch. 93), replacing former § 48-3a-108.
Searching for an LLC name in Utah
Check the name on businessregistration.utah.gov, where the Business Entity Record Search and the Name Availability search cost nothing at the moment; charges of $1 to $3 for searching principals are due to come back. Read the DBAs in the results too, because Utah blocks an LLC name that matches a registered DBA.
Open the official Utah entity search
Leave the ending off when you search, so every version of the name shows up, then compare each result word by word. If one matches apart from spacing, punctuation or a plural, change a real word in your name.
Holding the name: Utah LLC name reservation
Holding an LLC name before you file costs $22 (fiscal 2026 schedule) and lasts 120 calendar days. Submit the application online at businessregistration.utah.gov or send the Division's form. It's optional.
This fee couldn't be matched to a current official fee page, so ask the Utah Division of Corporations and Commercial Code to confirm it before paying.
Forming the LLC in Utah
Forming the LLC takes a Certificate of Organization, filed online, for $59. That's the fiscal 2026 fee, in effect from July 1, 2025; no fiscal 2027 schedule turned up, so check the amount when you file.
File the Certificate of Organization online
This filing fee isn't on a current official fee page that we could find, so ask the Utah Division of Corporations and Commercial Code to confirm it.
Every year, by the last day of the month in which the LLC was formed, it files an $18 annual renewal, and it may file as much as 60 days early. No publication is needed. A Certificate of Existence is $12 in the short form, emailed when you buy it online, or $20 for the long form, plus $75 to expedite (1-2 business days); dissolved, expired, revoked or cancelled companies can't get one. Utah tax obligations weren't part of our research.
When the LLC trades under another name
An LLC can own DBAs. Register each one with the Division within 30 days of using it, for $22. The certificate names the owner and, under the new code, a Utah registered agent, and it lasts three years. Renew starting 60 days before expiry; if it lapses for more than 30 days after the expiration notice, the name becomes available to anyone (Utah Code § 42-2-204).

These are the official pages behind every fact above. If one of them now says something different, it's right and this page is out of date.
A few were read from search results, not the page itself, because the site refused direct requests; treat the facts they back as provisional until the Utah Division of Corporations and Commercial Code confirms them.
